‘What’s in a name?’

I am frequently asked why the name ‘Tutor Rose.’ Well, it is due to the fact that the rose as a floral emblem has a central place in British history and culture, from the civil war known as the Wars of the Roses, to the Tudor Rose as a symbol of the British monarchy, to Shakespeare, to the rose as England’s national flower. Tutor Rose – a pun on the Tudor Rose – draws on this tradition.

The logo, however, is inspired by the white rose of York, the city in which I have studied and which has a special place in my heart. But, as Shakespeare says: ‘What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’
